There’s a Korea that tourists see, and a Korea that Koreans know.
The Korea in travel brochures is beautiful – ancient palaces, colorful hanbok, bustling markets. But there’s another layer beneath, one filled with meaning that takes a lifetime to understand.
I grew up in Korea. I’ve lived here all my life. And still, I’m discovering new depths to my own culture – layers of symbolism in traditional patterns, forgotten stories behind everyday customs, reasons why we do things that even many Koreans might not remember.
Why I Created This Space
I created Stories of Korea because I wanted to share what lies beneath the surface. Not the K-pop news or drama spoilers (honestly, I don’t keep up with idols!), but the enduring stories – the ones my grandparents told me, the traditions that still shape Korean life, the historical moments that echo in our present.
What I Promise You
Authenticity: These aren’t stories filtered through translation or tourism. They’re stories from someone who lives this culture every day.
Depth: We won’t stop at “what” – we’ll explore “why.” Why that color? Why that food? Why that gesture? Understanding the “why” transforms surface knowledge into genuine understanding.
Honesty: Korean culture doesn’t need exaggeration to be fascinating. I’ll share what I truly know, acknowledge what I’m uncertain about, and research what I want to learn.
Growth: Even as a Korean, I’m still learning. This blog is my way of diving deeper into my own heritage while sharing it with you.
The Stories You’ll Find Here
Each week, I share stories about:
Symbols and meanings that appear throughout Korean culture
Historical figures and events that shaped who we are
Food traditions and what they mean beyond taste
Daily customs and how Koreans actually live
Cultural context to help you understand what you see in Korean media
This isn’t about making Korea seem exotic or perfect. It’s about helping you truly understand what you’re seeing, tasting, and experiencing.
